Reviewed on 9 October 2026. This guide maps electric-vehicle (EV) work in India to the background you already have, shows which official documents tell you where activity is actually funded, and gives you a 90-day plan to build evidence an EV employer can check. It deliberately avoids a national "EV salary table": no official dataset supports one, and pay varies too much by employer, role and city to summarise honestly.
Start with official signals, not hype
Growth claims about EVs are easy to find and hard to verify. Government scheme pages and standards notices are better guides to where hiring is likely, because they show which activities are being funded or regulated.
PM E-DRIVE: demand support, charging and testing
The PM E-DRIVE scheme portal of the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) says the scheme was notified by Gazette S.O. 4259(E) on 29 September 2024 and runs from 1 October 2024. When we checked it on 9 October 2026, the portal showed total MHI support of ₹11,900 crore and said the terminal date for electric two-wheelers had been extended to 31 March 2028. It also lists an amendment notification dated 10 August 2026.
| Component listed on the portal | MHI support (₹ crore) |
|---|---|
| Electric two-wheelers | 2,767 |
| E-rickshaws and e-carts | 50 |
| Electric three-wheelers (L5) | 857 |
| E-ambulances | 500 |
| E-trucks | 500 |
| E-buses | 4,391 |
| Public charging stations | 2,000 |
| Upgrading testing agencies | 780 |
| Administrative expenses | 55 |
| Total | 11,900 |
These components add up to ₹11,900 crore. For a job seeker, the useful reading is that money is going into two-wheelers, buses, commercial vehicles, charging and vehicle testing. Each of these needs engineers, technicians, operations staff and compliance work. Components can close early when their allocation runs out, so check the portal for the segment you care about.
PLI for advanced chemistry cells: battery manufacturing
The MHI page on the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage says the Cabinet approved it on 12 May 2021 with an outlay of ₹18,100 crore. The page states that three beneficiaries have been allocated 30 GWh in total and that 20 GWh is available for new allocation. Beneficiaries must reach at least 25% domestic value addition, rising to 60% within five years. The page gives the performance period as 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2029.
Cell manufacturing is concentrated in a small number of large plants. That means fewer employers, but each one needs process, quality, equipment and materials specialists.
Passenger-car manufacturing and safety standards
MHI's page on the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) records government approval on 15 March 2024. Read the scheme portal it links to for the conditions. Don't rely on news reports about which company will build what.
Safety rules shape engineering work too. A Ministry of Road Transport and Highways release dated 27 September 2022 says amendments to the battery-testing standards AIS-156 and AIS-038 (Rev 2) would apply in two phases, from 1 December 2022 and 31 March 2023. AIS-156 covers L-category vehicles such as two- and three-wheelers. Battery management systems (BMS), pack design and testing under these standards are everyday work in EV engineering teams.
For market size, open the Vahan dashboard and filter registrations by fuel type, vehicle class and state. Ten minutes on the dashboard tells you more about a segment in your state than a headline growth percentage does.
Keep preparing
Continue with Sarkari Resume Templates₹299 — coaching के एक महीने से काफ़ी सस्ता / far cheaper than a month of coachingMatch your background to an EV role
| Your background | Roles to target | Evidence worth building | Topics to learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Battery-pack mechanical and thermal design, manufacturing engineering, quality | A pack enclosure CAD model with a written heat-load estimate | DFMEA, thermal management, AIS-156 battery requirements |
| Electrical / EEE | Power electronics (inverters, DC-DC converters, on-board chargers), motor control, charger installation | A simulated converter or motor-control project with test plots | Power-electronics basics, earth-leakage and protection concepts, charger safety |
| Electronics / embedded / CS | BMS firmware, vehicle control software, telematics, charging-management software | A state-of-charge estimator on a microcontroller, with CAN logs | C, CAN, real-time systems, ISO 26262 functional-safety concepts |
| Chemistry / chemical / materials | Cell process engineering, quality labs, recycling | Lab reports on cell testing; an explanation of a chemistry trade-off | Cell formats and chemistries, process control, quality systems |
| ITI / diploma | EV service, assembly and charging maintenance | Certified training and supervised practical hours | High-voltage safety and diagnostics |
| Non-engineering | Charging-site operations, fleet operations, after-sales, scheme and compliance documentation | A process note or audit checklist for one site or workflow | The scheme rules for your segment, basic charging operations |
If you are at ITI or diploma level, the Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) lists EV job roles including Electric Vehicle Service Technician, Electric Vehicle Service Assistant (2W) and Electric Vehicle Assembly Operator. Before you pay for a course, ask the training centre whether its assessment and certificate are linked to ASDC, and check that claim on ASDC's own site.
Worked example: the calculation behind a BMS project
Employers in battery and BMS roles often ask candidates to explain state-of-charge (SoC) estimation. Here is the simplest method, coulomb counting, applied to an illustrative pack. It isn't a real product specification.
- Pack energy: 2.5 kWh at a nominal 48 V
- Approximate capacity: 2,500 Wh ÷ 48 V ≈ 52.08 Ah
- Discharge: 20 A for 45 minutes, so 20 A × 0.75 h = 15 Ah
- SoC drop: 15 ÷ 52.08 ≈ 0.288, or about 28.8 percentage points
If the pack started at 90% SoC, the estimate after this discharge is about 61.2%. In an interview, the strong answer is the next step: coulomb counting drifts because of current-sensor error and temperature effects, so real BMS designs correct it using voltage-based estimates when the pack is at rest. If your portfolio project shows the drift and how you corrected it, it is far more convincing than a certificate alone.
Check salary claims before believing them
Earlier versions of many EV career articles, including this one, printed fixed salary bands for each seniority level without a verifiable source. We have removed them. To judge an offer:
- Ask for a written breakdown of the CTC: fixed pay, variable pay, one-time payments and employer contributions.
- Compare like with like: the same role family, city, experience band and date.
- Treat crowd-sourced salary sites as rough signals and note how many entries sit behind each figure.
- For a worked method of comparing two offers, see our embedded engineer salary guide. The same steps apply to BMS and vehicle-software roles.
A 90-day EV career plan
Days 1–15: choose a segment. Pick one segment (two-wheelers, buses, charging or cells) and one role from the table. Read that segment's PM E-DRIVE rules or PLI page, and record three employers in it, using their own careers pages.
Days 16–45: build one piece of evidence. Do one project matched to your role, such as the SoC estimator, a converter simulation, a pack thermal estimate or a charging-site audit checklist. Write a one-page summary covering the problem, method, results, limits and what you would test next.
Days 46–70: learn the standards vocabulary. Read the AIS-156 or AIS-038 phase notice and note which parts of your project they touch. Be able to explain a DFMEA or a test plan in plain words.
Days 71–90: apply and get feedback. Apply to roles that match your evidence and ask at least two working engineers to review your summary. Refine it after each piece of feedback.
Red flags to avoid
- Unsourced plant announcements. "A global brand is building a factory in your state" is only news once the company itself confirms it, through a press release or a stock-exchange filing.
- Placement guarantees from paid courses. Ask for the certifying body and the assessment process in writing.
- Growth statistics with no dataset. Ask which dashboard or report a figure comes from, and for which period.
EV work in India is real, but it is spread across very different segments. If you choose one segment, learn its rules and standards, and show one well-documented project, you will be easier to hire than someone with a general interest in "EVs".
