VLSI Engineer Salary in India: Dated Pay References and a Skill Map

Reviewed on 9 October 2026. Salary figures for VLSI (chip design) engineers in India circulate widely, but few come with a source, a date and a clear definition. This guide uses two references we could verify: a dated government-society recruitment notice for a VLSI role, and a published salary survey for the closest adjacent category. It explains what each can and can't tell you, maps the VLSI skill areas employers ask for, and shows how to compare two offers.

Reference 1: a published VLSI role with its CTC

C-DAC (the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, a scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) published advertisement CDACB/RCT/2026, dated 17 January 2026, for contract project roles in Bengaluru. One of them was:

FieldWhat the notice says
PostProject Engineer – VLSI: RTL/FPGA/ASIC front-end design, RTL-to-GDSII, physical design (PE-04)
Posts and location6, Bengaluru
QualificationB.E./B.Tech in ECE, E&TC or VLSI (60% or equivalent CGPA), or M.E./M.Tech, or a relevant postgraduate degree, or a Ph.D.
Post-qualification experience0–4 years
Upper age limit30 years for freshers, 45 for experienced candidates
Initial CTC₹4.49–7.11 lakh a year; the notice says candidates with more experience within the bracket get a higher salary as per policy

This is a historical recruitment example for a contract project role, not a market average. It doesn't show pay at semiconductor companies, and it doesn't tell you what any single candidate was offered.

Reference 2: the closest survey category

The Randstad India Salary Trends Report 2025–26 doesn't have a separate VLSI table. Its information technology section does include "hardware engineer" (page 41), reported as average annual CTC in ₹ lakh by experience band:

CityJunior (0–5 yrs)Middle (6–14 yrs)Senior (15+ yrs)
Bengaluru7.2019.0136.79
Hyderabad7.1918.9738.68
Chennai6.6820.2539.29
Pune6.4218.7332.62
Delhi-NCR5.9117.9634.68
Mumbai5.8119.9342.06
Ahmedabad5.7116.8233.23
Kolkata5.9013.5626.38

"Hardware engineer" is a broader category than VLSI design. It may include board-level, networking-hardware and support roles. Treat it as an adjacent reference, not a VLSI benchmark.

Why the policy context matters for jobs

The Union Cabinet approved the Semicon India programme on 15 December 2021, with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore, and set up the India Semiconductor Mission (PIB release). The programme includes a Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme with an outlay of ₹1,000 crore for domestic chip-design companies, startups and MSMEs. A PIB release of 30 July 2025 reported 23 chip-design projects sanctioned under it. A PIB backgrounder of 7 February 2026 describes India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, announced in the Union Budget 2026–27. Its focus includes semiconductor equipment and materials, and designing Indian semiconductor IP.

These are signals of where design work is being funded. They aren't salary data.

The skill map employers publish

The C-DAC notice lists desired skills that match the main VLSI job families:

Job familySkills named in the notice
RTL / front-end designDigital logic design (combinational, sequential, FSMs, pipelining); RTL coding in Verilog or SystemVerilog; clock- and reset-domain crossing checks; protocols such as AMBA (AXI, AHB, APB), PCIe, USB, Ethernet, DDR
VerificationSystemVerilog/UVM; simulators such as Vivado, ModelSim, Questa, VCS, Xcelium
Physical designThe RTL-to-signoff flow (synthesis, floor planning, placement, CTS, routing, STA); timing closure; DRC/LVS/ERC; MMMC STA and ECO flows; IR drop and EM analysis; LEF/DEF, Liberty and GDSII formats
DFTScan insertion, test points, MBIST
Across all familiesScripting in TCL, Perl or Python for flow automation

If you're a student, pick one family and build evidence for it. For front-end design, that could be a small RTL design with a testbench and a timing-clean FPGA build. For physical design, it could be a documented run through an open-source flow with its timing reports.

Worked example: comparing two VLSI offers

The two offers below are illustrative.

A verification engineer with two years' experience has two Bengaluru offers:

ComponentOffer AOffer B
Fixed annual pay₹8,40,000₹7,20,000
Target variable pay₹42,000 (5% of fixed)₹72,000 (10% of fixed)
One-time joining bonus₹0₹1,00,000
First-year total at target₹8,82,000₹8,92,000
Recurring total at target (year 2)₹8,82,000₹7,92,000

Offer B looks ₹10,000 higher in the first year, but only because of the joining bonus. From the second year, Offer A is ₹90,000 higher at target, and its guaranteed fixed pay is ₹1,20,000 higher every year.

Both recurring totals are above every city's junior-band "hardware engineer" average in the table above. That doesn't tell you which offer is better, though. Ask both employers about the tools and flows you'll work on, the size of the verification team, and how variable pay was actually paid out last cycle.

Checks before accepting a VLSI offer

  • Which part of the flow? Get the job family (design, verification, physical design, DFT, analog) in writing. It shapes your next role.
  • Tool access and training. Ask which EDA tools you'll use and whether training is provided.
  • Written breakdown. Separate fixed pay, variable pay, employer contributions and one-time payments.
  • Contract terms. For project roles like the C-DAC example, check the contract length and the extension conditions.
  • Bond or training-cost clauses. Read them before signing, and ask for any amounts in writing.

Limits of these references

  • The C-DAC range applies to one contract recruitment from January 2026, not to the industry.
  • The survey category isn't VLSI-specific, and it reports averages only.
  • Neither source gives take-home pay, which depends on deductions and your tax position.
