GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores are used for admission to master's and doctoral programmes, for scholarships, and by a number of public sector undertakings (PSUs) in their recruitment. If you missed GATE 2026 or want to improve on it, your next attempt is GATE 2027. This roadmap sets out the official dates, the paper pattern and marking rules, and a month-by-month plan from now to the exam.
Everything below is from the official GATE 2027 website run by IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, checked on 9 October 2026. The site notes that all dates are liable to change.
GATE 2027 key dates
| Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Online application (GOAPS) opened | 2 September 2026 (after two revisions) |
| Regular registration closed | 5 October 2026 |
| Extended registration with late fee closes | 12 October 2026 |

According to the eligibility page, candidates who are in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme, or who have completed any government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, are eligible. Candidates with certain professional-society qualifications (such as those of the Institution of Engineers (India)) are eligible if those examinations are approved as equivalent to a B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. Candidates with degrees from outside India need to be in at least the third year of, or have completed, a bachelor's degree of at least three years.
Paper pattern and marking
| Item | GATE 2027 rule |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer-based test |
| Language | English |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Papers | 30 test papers |
| Questions | 65 in total: 10 General Aptitude + 55 subject |
| Total marks | 100 |
| Question types | Multiple Choice (MCQ), Multiple Select (MSQ), Numerical Answer Type (NAT) |
| Marks per question | 1 or 2 |
Distribution of marks: for most engineering papers, General Aptitude carries 15 marks, Engineering Mathematics 13 marks and subject questions 72 marks. For papers AR, CY, DA, EY, GE, GG, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL, it is General Aptitude 15 and subject 85. (XE includes an Engineering Mathematics section XE0 of 15 marks.)
Negative marking: only MCQs carry negative marks: 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. There is no negative marking for MSQ or NAT, and no partial marking in MSQ.
Worked example: how marking shapes your attempt
Illustrative calculation, not a cut-off prediction. Suppose a candidate's attempt looks like this:
| Question type | Correct | Wrong | Marks gained | Marks lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-mark MCQ | 10 | 3 | 10 | 3 × 1/3 = 1.00 |
| 2-mark MCQ | 8 | 4 | 16 | 4 × 2/3 ≈ 2.67 |
| 1-mark MSQ/NAT | 7 | 2 | 7 | 0 |
| 2-mark MSQ/NAT | 9 | 5 | 18 | 0 |
| Total | 51 | ≈ 3.67 |
Net score ≈ 51 − 3.67 = 47.33 out of 100.
Two lessons follow. First, wrong answers on MSQ and NAT cost nothing, so it is worth attempting them whenever you have a reasonable approach. Second, wrong 2-mark MCQs are the costliest guesses; attempt them only if you can eliminate options with confidence. Note too that an MSQ earns marks only if you select exactly the correct set of options, since there is no partial credit.
What a GATE score can be used for
The website's "Opportunities" page lists three uses:
- Admission to master's and direct doctoral programmes, and doctoral programmes in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies.
- Financial assistance: the site states that assistance for M.Tech students is ₹12,400 per month, generally for 22 months, and for direct PhD after B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc. equivalent is ₹37,000 per month for the first two years and ₹42,000 per month from the third to the fifth year, citing the relevant government circular.
- Recruitment: many PSUs have used GATE scores in recruitment; the site gives a non-exhaustive list including AAI, BHEL, BSNL, Coal India, CRIS, DVC, ECIL and EIL.
The same site states clearly that qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or employment, and that GATE qualification does not assure a PSU job. Each PSU announces its own GATE-based recruitment, eligibility and cut-offs separately.
A month-by-month plan to February 2027
Assuming you start in mid-October 2026 with about 16 weeks to go:
| Period | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-October to November | Download your paper's official syllabus from the website; map it against what you already know; finish weak core topics | A topic tracker with each syllabus line marked "strong", "revise" or "new" |
| December | Engineering Mathematics (if your paper has it) and General Aptitude; continue core subjects | Two topic-wise tests per week; error log started |
| January | Previous years' GATE question papers and full-length timed mocks | One full mock every 3–4 days, each followed by a written review |
| February (exam weeks) | Revision of formula sheets and error log; light practice | Rest and steady routine before your exam date |
Weekly rhythm: about two-thirds of study time on core subject, the rest on mathematics, aptitude and review. Keep an error log with three columns: question type, why you got it wrong (concept, calculation or misreading), and the fix.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Studying from an outdated syllabus. The GATE 2027 website says the syllabi have been revised; download your paper's syllabus from it rather than relying on old notes.
- Ignoring General Aptitude. It is 15 marks in every paper.
- Guessing 2-mark MCQs blindly. These carry the largest penalty per wrong answer.
- Practising only on paper. GATE is a computer-based test and NAT answers are entered on screen; take mocks in the same format.
- Assuming a score guarantees a seat or a PSU job. It is one input; each institute and PSU applies its own criteria.
GATE rewards steady, syllabus-led preparation and smart attempt choices. Fix your dates now, follow the official pattern, and use mocks and an error log to turn practice into marks.
