Reviewed: 9 October 2026. This guide retains its historical 2025 URL and separates that recruitment cycle from the newer notification. “IBPS Clerk” remains a familiar search term; the official notifications reviewed here use Customer Service Associate (CSA). Check the notification for your own cycle before applying a timetable or eligibility rule.
Separate the 2025 and 2026 recruitment cycles
The official CSA XV notification covers vacancies for 2026–27. The official CSA XVI notification covers vacancies for 2027–28. The vacancy year is not interchangeable with the application year.
This distinction matters when using an older preparation guide. Both notifications have the same preliminary examination structure, but their main examination totals differ. A practice paper labelled “2025 pattern” should not automatically be used as a timed replica of CSA XVI. Keep a short record containing the cycle, source document, section times and the date you last checked official updates.
This article does not announce an open registration window or guarantee a future examination date. Follow the official IBPS website for the applicable notice, corrigenda, call letter and instructions. An original notification's tentative schedule is evidence of its planned schedule, not proof that every event subsequently occurred on those dates.
Keep preparing

The following figures are taken from the two notifications, rather than an older generic clerk pattern.
| Preliminary test: both XV and XVI | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Each test has its own time allocation. Finishing English early does not create extra numerical time in a separately timed simulation.
| Main examination test | XV questions / marks / minutes | XVI questions / marks / minutes |
|---|---|---|
| General/Financial Awareness | 40 / 50 / 20 | 40 / 50 / 20 |
| General English | 40 / 40 / 35 | 40 / 40 / 35 |
| Reasoning Ability | 40 / 60 / 35 | 40 / 60 / 35 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 / 50 / 30 | 40 / 50 / 35 |
| Total | 155 / 200 / 120 | 160 / 200 / 125 |
For XVI, quantitative practice must therefore accommodate five additional questions and five additional minutes. Section totals alone do not establish that every question in a main-exam section carries identical marks.
The notifications specify a penalty of one quarter of the marks assigned to a wrongly answered question. An unanswered question attracts no penalty. “Every wrong answer costs 0.25” is only correct for a one-mark item; it is not a reliable blanket rule for weighted questions.
Verify eligibility before investing in a plan
For CSA XVI, the base age requirement is 20–28 years as of 1 August 2026, with the notification's inclusive birth-date range of 2 August 1998 to 1 August 2006. Category-specific relaxations and documentary requirements must be checked against the full notification; this base range does not describe every eligible applicant.
The XVI notification requires a recognised graduation qualification, or a recognised equivalent, with valid graduation evidence at registration and its qualification cutoff of 21 August 2026. Being in a final year does not, by itself, establish eligibility. Its computer-knowledge requirement also needs attention: the notification describes relevant certificates, diplomas, degrees or study of the subject in school, college or an institute. Special provisions should be read in their own context rather than applied to all candidates.
Record the exact document you have, the date it establishes and the relevant notification clause. If those disagree, resolve the discrepancy through the official recruitment instructions instead of assuming that an application submission proves eligibility. Do not infer that a later administrative update automatically changed the qualification cutoff.
Check examination medium and local language separately
Non-English examination media depend on the state or Union Territory options listed in the notification. The English Language test is in English. It is inaccurate to describe the entire recruitment as offering only English and Hindi everywhere.
The opted local-language requirement is a separate selection condition involving reading, writing, understanding and speaking. The notification describes exemption through the relevant language-study certificate at Class 10 or above. Where required, the qualifying language test occurs after qualifying the main examination or provisional allotment and before joining. Failure can prevent appointment.
Prepare a language-document checklist alongside the academic checklist. Strong reasoning marks do not replace a missing required certificate or a failed qualifying language test.
Turn an original diagnostic into specific practice
The next example is invented for explanation, not an official question paper, previous-year paper or selection forecast. Suppose you practise twenty one-mark numerical items and record twelve correct, four wrong and four blank. Your raw practice score is 12 − (4 × 0.25) = 11 out of 20. Your attempted-question accuracy is 12 ÷ 16 = 75%; it is not 60%, which uses all twenty questions as its denominator.
Now label the four errors: two percentage setups, one copied number and one unsupported guess. The next session should include checked percentage setups and deliberate copying checks. Simply answering more questions would leave the identified problem untreated.
An original practice item: a fictional savings balance rises from ₹8,000 to ₹9,200. The increase is ₹1,200, and ₹1,200 ÷ ₹8,000 × 100 = 15%. Dividing by the final balance instead would answer a different question. Write the baseline explicitly before calculating.
For a weighted two-mark practice item, a wrong response loses 0.5 mark under a quarter-of-assigned-marks rule. Keep item weights visible. Neither example predicts IBPS's normalised score or cutoff.
Build a plan that responds to your evidence
Start with one separately timed diagnostic under the correct cycle's conditions. Afterwards, classify errors into concept gaps, misreading, calculation, unsupported guessing and time pressure. Practise the largest recoverable gap, then repeat a comparable set to see whether the same error persists.
A candidate with a short weekday study window could use one session for a concept and worked solutions, another for a timed section, and a later session for reviewing mistakes. This is an adaptable sequence, not a compulsory daily-hours quota. Add financial-awareness revision across the preparation period rather than waiting until a preliminary result to begin everything for the main examination.
When reviewing current information, save the source and publication date. Distinguish a factual update from a prediction or coaching-site estimate. Review your language requirement and documents while preparing, not only after the written stages.
Explore the mock-test catalogue for available practice. Check the listed format, duration and content before treating a particular test as a replica of this notification. A catalogue link is not a claim that every product follows CSA XVI or contains official previous-year questions.
Questions candidates commonly need to resolve
Does a strong preliminary score count directly toward final merit? The notifications use main-examination marks for final merit. Preliminary qualification has its own test cutoffs; main qualification includes individual-test and total-score conditions.
Can a practice score establish a safe number of attempts? No. The notifications describe cutoff and normalisation processes, including equipercentile normalisation where applicable. A raw practice score does not establish a future state/category cutoff.
Is provisional allotment an employment offer? No. The XVI notification explicitly distinguishes it from an offer of employment and makes it conditional on the allotted bank's criteria, identity and document verification, and applicable language requirements.
What should I retain from this older URL? Use its preparation method, but attach every cycle-specific fact to the relevant official notification. Review that record when a new notice changes the pattern or conditions.
