Reasoning25 Qs, 25 marks25 Qs, 25 marks
Third testQuantitative Aptitude, 25 Qs, 25 marksGeneral Awareness with special reference to banking, 25 Qs, 25 marks
Professional Knowledge25 Qs, 50 marks25 Qs, 50 marks

Candidates must clear the cut-off in each of the four tests.

Main

For IT, AFO, HR and Marketing: English (30 Qs, 30 marks), Reasoning (40 Qs, 40 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (30 Qs, 30 marks) and Professional Knowledge (50 Qs, 100 marks) in 125 minutes, plus a 25-mark English descriptive paper (30 minutes). For Law Officer, the third test is General Awareness with special reference to banking; for Rajbhasha Adhikari, it is the same general awareness test plus a descriptive Professional Knowledge paper instead of English.

The notification states that in the Main exam, all tests except Professional Knowledge are qualifying, and merit is based on the Professional Knowledge score.

Penalty and final merit

  • One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer in both preliminary and main exams; blank answers carry no penalty.
  • The interview carries 100 marks, with minimum qualifying marks of 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD).
  • Final merit uses Main and interview in an 80:20 ratio.

Worked example: why Professional Knowledge decides your rank

Illustrative calculation using the CRP SPL-XVI rules for an IT Officer candidate.

In the Main exam, Professional Knowledge has 50 questions for 100 marks, so each question is worth 2 marks and a wrong answer costs 0.25 × 2 = 0.5 marks.

  • Candidate A: 34 correct, 8 wrong → 68 − 4 = 64
  • Candidate B: 30 correct, 4 wrong → 60 − 2 = 58

If both clear the qualifying tests, A is ahead on merit by 6 marks from this test alone, regardless of how much better B did in English or Reasoning, because those tests only need to be cleared.

Now the final score on the 80:20 ratio. Suppose IBPS scales the 100-mark Professional Knowledge score to 80 and the 100-mark interview to 20 (the notification gives the ratio, not the exact formula). A scoring 64 in Professional Knowledge and 60 in the interview would get (64 × 0.8) + (60 × 0.2) = 51.2 + 12 = 63.2; B with 58 and 75 would get 46.4 + 15 = 61.4. A strong interview narrows the gap, but the written score carries four times the weight.

Preparation pointers

  • Treat Professional Knowledge as the main subject. It decides your merit; use your degree syllabus and job-relevant fundamentals.
  • Clear every sectional cut-off. Prelims requires a cut-off in each test, and Main requires a minimum in each test.
  • Prepare for the descriptive paper (English for most posts) with timed letter and essay practice.
  • Prepare for the interview with your degree and work experience at the centre; it is 20% of the final score.

IBPS SO rewards depth in your professional field more than general aptitude. Confirm your eligibility against the exact post requirements, and build your preparation around the Professional Knowledge test.
