IBPS RRB 2026 (CRP-XV): Officer Scale-I vs Office Assistant

The Regional Rural Bank (RRB) exam run by IBPS is the one big banking recruitment where you compete for vacancies in a specific State or Union Territory, and where knowing the local language is an essential qualification. For the 2026 cycle, CRP RRBs-XV, the official notification is dated 1 September 2026 and is available on the IBPS CRP RRBs-XV page.

This guide focuses on the two entry-level posts most freshers apply for: Office Assistant (Multipurpose), a Group "B" post, and Officer Scale-I (Assistant Manager), a Group "A" post. It corrects several claims that circulate in older guides, including the wrong age limit for Officer Scale-I and an outdated Main exam pattern.

Vacancies are state by state

The updated Annexure I (as on 25.09.2026) lists indicative vacancies RRB by RRB across 28 State/UT rows. Adding up the state-wise totals in that annexure gives:

  • Office Assistants (Multipurpose): 8,222
  • Officer Scale-I: 4,256

These are our sums of the published rows, and the notice states that vacancies are indicative; allotment follows the vacancies RRBs actually report. The spread is very uneven. In the 25.09.2026 annexure, for example, Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank shows 1,200 Office Assistant and 425 Officer Scale-I vacancies, while Manipur Rural Bank shows zero for both posts, and Tripura Gramin Bank shows zero for Officer Scale-I. Check your state's row before you pick a state.

Eligibility: the details people get wrong

Age (as on 01.09.2026, before relaxations)

PostAge limitBorn between (both dates inclusive)
Office Assistant (Multipurpose)18 to 28 years02.09.1998 and 01.09.2008
Officer Scale-I (Assistant Manager)Above 18, below 30 years02.09.1996 and 01.09.2008
Officer Scale-II (Manager)Above 21, below 32 years02.09.1994 and 01.09.2005
Officer Scale-III (Senior Manager)Above 21, below 40 years02.09.1986 and 01.09.2005

The minimum age for Officer Scale-I is 18, not 21 as some guides claim. Category relaxations apply as set out in the notice.

Education and local language

For both Office Assistant and Officer Scale-I, the essential qualification is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university (eligibility is reckoned as on 21.09.2026, the date stated in the notice), plus proficiency in the local language prescribed by the participating RRB. Working knowledge of computers is listed as desirable. For Officer Scale-I, the notice adds that preference will be given to degrees in fields such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, veterinary science, agricultural engineering, pisciculture, agricultural marketing and cooperation, information technology, management, law, economics or accountancy.

On local language, the notice says:

  • You are treated as proficient if you studied the State's language in Standard VIII or any higher level in a Government-recognised board or school, or hold a certificate to that effect.
  • If you do not meet this at the time of selection, you get six months from joining to acquire proficiency. An RRB's Board can extend that within its rules, but not beyond the probation period.

Applying for more than one post

You may apply for Office Assistant and also for an officer post, but only one officer post (Scale-I, II or III). Applications for more than one officer post are summarily rejected. Each post needs a separate application and fee: ₹850 generally, and ₹175 for SC/ST/PwBD (and, for Office Assistant, also ESM/DESM), inclusive of GST.

Exam pattern for 2026

Preliminary exam

Office AssistantReasoning404025 min
Office AssistantNumerical Ability404020 min
Officer Scale-IReasoning404025 min
Officer Scale-IQuantitative Aptitude404020 min

Each prelims paper is 80 questions, 80 marks and 45 minutes, and you must clear the cut-off in both tests.

Main exam (same structure for both posts)

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
Reasoning405030 min
Computer Knowledge402015 min
General Awareness404015 min
English Language or Hindi Language (choose one)404030 min
Quantitative Aptitude (Scale-I) / Numerical Ability (OA)405030 min
Total200200120 min

A wrong answer costs one-fourth (0.25) of that question's marks in every objective test. A blank costs nothing.

What happens after the Main exam

  • Office Assistants: there is no interview. Provisional allotment is based on Main exam marks and the vacancies reported by the RRBs of the State/UT you applied for, subject to minimum scores in each Main exam test.
  • Officer Scale-I: shortlisted candidates face a common interview of 100 marks, coordinated by nodal RRBs with NABARD and IBPS. The minimum qualifying mark is not less than 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD), and the Main exam and interview are weighted 80:20.

A practical tool: the 15-minute sections

Two Main exam sections give you 15 minutes for 40 questions. That is 900 seconds ÷ 40 = 22.5 seconds per question for both General Awareness and Computer Knowledge. In comparison, Reasoning and Quant/Numerical Ability give you 30 minutes for 40 questions, or 45 seconds each.

That has two consequences for preparation:

  1. Awareness and computer questions are a recall test, not a thinking test. If you need to work something out, you have probably run out of time. Practise in short, timed sets of 10 questions in 225 seconds.
  2. These sections reward early, steady revision. Twenty-two seconds is enough to recognise a fact you have revised several times, not one you read once.

Decision table: Office Assistant, Officer Scale-I or both?

Your situationWhat to consider
You are 18-28 and want the maximum number of openingsOffice Assistant has the larger indicative count (8,222 vs 4,256 in the 25.09.2026 annexure). Apply for both if eligible.
You are 28 or 29 (General/EWS, before relaxation)You may be outside the Office Assistant limit but within the Officer Scale-I limit; check your exact date of birth against the table above.
You want selection on written marks aloneOffice Assistant has no interview stage.
You are confident in interviewsOfficer Scale-I's 20% interview weight can help you move up the merit list.
You did not study the State's language to Standard VIII or aboveYou can still be selected, but you must acquire proficiency within six months of joining, as the notice requires.
Your state shows zero or very few vacanciesLook at the annexure again before the next cycle; vacancies are reported RRB by RRB and change between corrigenda.

Before you rely on any guide

  • Read the CRP RRBs-XV notification PDF and every corrigendum on the IBPS page; vacancy tables for this cycle were updated on 09.09.2026, 15.09.2026 and 25.09.2026.
  • Do not trust "expected vacancy" headlines; the annexure is the only official figure, and it is indicative.
  • If you are deciding between RRB and public sector bank routes, our comparison of banking exam routes and our IBPS Clerk preparation guide explain the other common entry points.

The RRB exam matters in 2026 because it is the cycle under way now, with prelims due in the November/December window. If you registered, the most useful thing you can do is build speed for the two 15-minute sections and keep your local-language and category documents ready for allotment.
