The Staff Selection Commission's Junior Engineer recruitment changed in 2026. The exam is now called the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026, not "Civil, Mechanical and Electrical" as in 2025. It adds two new posts, and the final ranking now rests on Paper-II alone. If you prepared using older guides, several things you read are now out of date.
Everything below is checked against the SSC Notice of Junior Engineer Examination, 2026, uploaded on 2 September 2026. It also uses SSC's tentative vacancy list dated 8 October 2026.
Key dates
| Stage | Date in the notice |
|---|---|
| Online applications | 2 to 22 September 2026 (23:00) |

All posts are Group 'B', Level-6 (₹35,400–1,12,400) of the 7th CPC pay matrix. The notice announced 1,748 tentative vacancies. The list dated 8 October 2026 totals 1,699. Some of the larger entries are:
| Department | Post | Tentative vacancies (8 Oct 2026 list) |
|---|---|---|
| India Meteorological Department | Scientific Assistant | 462 |
| CPWD | JE (Civil) | 343 |
| Border Roads Organisation (male candidates only) | JE (Civil) | 271 |
| MES | JE (Electrical & Mechanical) | 161 |
| MES | JE (Civil) | 154 |
| CPWD | JE (Electrical) | 103 |
| Department of Telecommunications | JE (Telecom) | 69 |
| Brahmaputra Board | JE (Civil) | 56 |
The JE (Telecom) post in DoT and the Scientific Assistant post in IMD are the two additions to this exam. The 2025 notice covered only Civil, Mechanical and Electrical streams. Vacancies can change again before the final allocation.
Eligibility depends on the department
There is no single qualification for "SSC JE". Each department sets its own, and the age limit is either 30 or 32. The crucial date for age is 1 August 2026.
| Department and post | Essential qualification (summary) | Age limit |
|---|---|---|
| BRO JE (Civil) | Degree in Civil, or 3-year diploma plus 2 years' experience | Up to 30 |
| MES JE (Civil) | Degree in Civil, or 3-year diploma plus 2 years' experience | Up to 30 |
| CPWD JE (Civil) / JE (Electrical) | Diploma in Civil / Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical | Up to 32 |
| Central Water Commission JE (Civil/Mech) | Degree or diploma in the branch | Up to 30 |
| DGLL JE (Civil/Electrical) | Degree, or diploma plus 3 years' experience | Up to 32 |
| DoT JE (Telecom) | BE/BTech in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical Communications, CS, Telecom, IT or Instrumentation | Up to 30 |
| IMD Scientific Assistant | B.Sc. with Physics, or a bachelor's in CS/Computer Applications/Electronics or related engineering branches | Up to 30 |
Three rules catch people out:
- Experience must come after the qualification. Internships or training during your course do not count.
- BRO posts are for male candidates only. BRO also has its own physical and medical standards, set out in an annexure to the notice. If you list BRO as a preference and then fail those standards, SSC may not reallocate you.
- ODL and online engineering qualifications are not accepted except where the statutory rules permit them.
The fee was ₹100. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen were exempt.
The scheme: what changed in 2026
| Paper | Content | Questions / marks | Time | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | General Intelligence & Reasoning (50/50), General Awareness (50/50), and your engineering or subject part (100/100) | 200 / 200 | 2 hours | 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper-II | Your engineering or subject part only | 100 / 300 | 2 hours | 1 per wrong answer |
The subject parts are Civil & Structural (A), Electrical (B), Mechanical (C), Computer Science & IT (D), Electronics & Telecommunication (E), Physics (F) and Telecommunication (G). IMD applicants choose D, E or F according to their degree. Your choice cannot be changed after you apply.
The big change: the 2026 notice says Paper-I is qualifying. Final selection and allocation are made on Paper-II performance together with your post preferences. Under the 2025 notice, final selection used performance in both Paper-I and Paper-II. Qualifying marks in each paper are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS and 20% for other categories.
The notice also says a scientific calculator is available on screen throughout the exam. The IS 456:2000 tables and steam tables are available on the console when needed. Physical calculators and tables are not allowed.
Worked example: Paper-II arithmetic (illustrative)
Each Paper-II question carries 3 marks (300 ÷ 100) and a wrong answer costs 1 mark.
- Candidate X attempts 80 questions: 60 right, 20 wrong. Score = 180 − 20 = 160.
- Candidate Y attempts 90 questions: 63 right, 27 wrong. Score = 189 − 27 = 162.
Y's 10 extra attempts produced only 3 more correct answers, yet still added a net 2 marks. Here is why. An attempt with probability p of being right is worth 3p − (1 − p) = 4p − 1 marks on average. That is positive whenever p is above 25%. In Paper-I (1 mark right, 0.25 wrong), the break-even probability is 20%.
In practice:
- Attempt a question if you can eliminate at least one option, or if you can work it to a likely answer.
- Skip only true blind guesses.
- Paper-II now decides your rank, so put most of your study time into the technical syllabus. Use mixed-topic timed sets, because a 2-hour paper of 100 technical questions leaves 72 seconds per question.
Your SSC JE checklist
- Re-read your post preference list against BRO's physical standards and the male-only rule.
- Confirm your degree or diploma, plus any experience, meets the exact row for each department you prefer.
- Download the admit card only from SSC's notice links.
- Prepare Paper-I to clear the qualifying line safely, then shift the bulk of your preparation to Paper-II.
- Practise with the on-screen calculator style rather than a physical calculator.
