The final stage of a bank officer recruitment is short compared with months of written-exam preparation, but it can change your rank. This guide explains, from the 2026 official notices, which bank recruitments actually have an interview, how much it counts, what else happens around it, and how to prepare in a structured way.
First, check whether your exam has an interview at all
Many aspirants prepare for an interview that their recruitment does not have. Here is what the current notices say:
| Recruitment (2026 cycle) | Stage after the Main exam | Interview marks | How it counts in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO/MT (CRP PO/MT-XVI notice dated 01.07.2026) | Personality Test (self-report), then common interview | 100; minimum not less than 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD) | Main exam : interview = 80 : 20 |
| SBI PO (advertisement CRPD/PO/2026-27/09 dated 18.06.2026) | Psychometric test, group exercise and interview | Group exercise 20 + interview 30 = 50; minimum set by the bank | Main exam (230) scaled to 75; Phase-III (50) scaled to 25 |
| IBPS RRB Officers Scale I, II, III (CRP RRBs-XV notice dated 01.09.2026) | Common interview, coordinated by nodal RRBs with NABARD and IBPS | 100; minimum not less than 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD) | Online exam : interview = 80 : 20 |
| IBPS RRB Office Assistant (same notice) | No interview | None | Allotment on Main exam marks |
| IBPS Clerk (CRP CSA-XVI notice dated 01.08.2026) | No interview; a qualifying Local Language Proficiency Test where applicable | None | Main exam marks only |
So "banking interview preparation" really means preparing for officer recruitments. For clerical and Office Assistant posts, your effort is better spent on the Main exam and on getting your documents in order.

IBPS PO and RRB Officers: an illustration
The notices give an 80:20 ratio. The example below is a simplified, hypothetical illustration of that weighting; IBPS applies its own score processing.
| Candidate | Main exam (out of 200) | Interview (out of 100) | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 130 | 50 | 130 ÷ 200 × 80 + 50 ÷ 100 × 20 = 52 + 10 = 62 |
| B | 120 | 75 | 120 ÷ 200 × 80 + 75 ÷ 100 × 20 = 48 + 15 = 63 |
B overtakes A despite a 10-mark deficit in the Main exam.
SBI PO: each Phase-III mark weighs more
SBI scales Main exam marks (out of 230) to 75 and group exercise + interview (out of 50) to 25. One Main exam mark is worth about 0.33 of a final mark (75 ÷ 230), while one Phase-III mark is worth 0.5 (25 ÷ 50). A candidate who improves their Phase-III score by 6 marks gains 3 final marks, about the same as 9 extra Main exam marks (3 ÷ 0.326 ≈ 9.2).
What happens before you face the panel
Both IBPS PO and SBI PO now place a personality assessment in front of the interviewers:
- IBPS PO: the Personality Test is non-qualifying, but appearing for it is mandatory to be eligible for the interview. Your personality profile is placed before the interview panel.
- SBI PO: the psychometric test findings are placed before the panel "to have a thorough perspective on the candidates", and all its questions are mandatory.
The practical takeaway: answer the self-report test honestly and consistently. Do not try to "game" it with the answers you think a banker should give. The panel may ask about what the profile shows, and an interview that contradicts your own test responses is harder to handle than an honest one.
Documents: the part that can end your candidature
The IBPS PO notice says documents must be submitted at the interview and that missing ones can make you ineligible. It also says candidates will need to upload soft copies through an IBPS link. Build this file at least two weeks before your interview date:
- Printout of the interview call letter
- System-generated printout of your online application form
- Proof of date of birth (birth certificate or Class X certificate showing date of birth)
- Photo identity proof with exactly the same name as on the call letter, plus a photocopy
- Graduation mark sheets/certificates showing the result was declared on or before the notice's cut-off date
- If you converted CGPA to a percentage, a certificate from your university stating its conversion norms
- Caste certificate (SC/ST/OBC) in the Government of India format; OBC must include the non-creamy-layer clause
- EWS Income & Asset Certificate in the prescribed format, if applicable
- Disability certificate in the prescribed format, if applicable, and scribe details if you used one
- "No Objection Certificate" from your employer if you work in government, a PSU or a bank (IBPS says a conditional NOC limited to one bank will not be accepted)
- Experience certificates, if applicable
- Original + self-attested photocopies of everything, arranged in the order the notice lists
For SBI PO, the advertisement fixes the OBC certificate issue window (01.04.2026 to the interview date) and requires the EWS certificate to be based on FY 2025-26 income.
A three-week preparation plan
Week 1: know your own file
Print your submitted application and read every line as an interviewer would. For each field (degree, subjects, home state, hobbies, work experience, gap years), write two likely follow-up questions and a short, truthful answer. Assume the panel can see everything you submitted; you should know it better than they do.
Week 2: know the institution and the sector
- For IBPS PO, you are interviewing for a common process across 11 participating banks, so prepare a general understanding of how public sector banks work rather than one bank's product list. For SBI, read SBI's own website and its latest annual report.
- For banking and economy questions, read primary sources: the RBI's press releases and monetary policy statements for the current policy repo rate and recent circulars, rather than quoting a rate from memory or from an old guide. The IBPS PO Main exam syllabus itself names RBI circulars, so this reading also helps your written exam.
- For RRB Officers, read about the RRB you would join and about the state it serves. For Officer Scale I, the notice also makes proficiency in the local language an essential qualification, so expect to be comfortable using it.
Week 3: rehearse out loud
Practise with someone who will interrupt you. Use the prompts below, record your answers, and check them for length (aim for one to two minutes), structure and honesty.
Practice prompts (for rehearsal, not a list of questions any panel is known to ask):
- Walk us through your education and why you are applying for an officer post in a bank.
- You are posted to a branch far from home. How will you settle in?
- A customer is upset that a service request is delayed. What do you do first?
- Explain a current RBI decision in simple words to a first-time account holder.
- What did you do in a gap year, or since graduating?
- Tell us about a time you made a mistake at work or in college, and what you changed.
For SBI's group exercise, practise in groups of five or six: make one clear point early, build on others' points by name, and help the group reach a conclusion within time. Speaking the most is not the same as contributing the most.
Interview-day checklist
- Reach before the reporting time on the call letter; late arrivals can be refused
- Carry the document file and extra photographs if the call letter asks for them
- Formal, comfortable clothing you have worn before
- If you do not know an answer, say so briefly and move on; do not bluff
- Keep answers consistent with your application form and personality test
- Note your experience afterwards; if you face another bank interview, it is useful preparation material

Bank interviews reward candidates who are prepared, consistent and honest. Know your own record, read current banking news from primary sources, and treat the document file as part of the interview.
