Cognizant (often called CTS) hires freshers in India mainly through GenC, and experienced professionals through role-by-role openings. This guide summarises what Cognizant's official careers pages say about each route, checked in October 2026. It then gives you a practice set for the assessment and interview rounds, with worked answers. The practice questions are illustrative. They show the fundamentals IT services interviews usually test, not a confirmed list of Cognizant questions.
Route 1: GenC for freshers
Cognizant's GenC program page describes Generation Cognizant as its "hiring and development program for emerging talent in India". It is meant to move graduates from campus into full-time roles through role-based training and project exposure. Points from the page worth knowing:
- Two ways in. Campus hiring runs through your college: hackathons, information sessions and drives, coordinated by your placement officer. Off-campus drives are "designed for specific streams, roles and batches" and are open to students from all colleges.
- What you submit. Your resume and academic certificates.
- No service bond. The page says GenC has "no service bonds."
- Fast-track option. High performers can move into more advanced roles through a Digital Honors Program.
- Joining dates. Onboarding happens in batches based on business demand. There may be a gap between accepting your offer and getting your date of joining (DOJ).
The GenC hiring steps
Cognizant notes that not every candidate goes through every step, and that the process varies by role.
| Step | What the official page says | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Through a campus drive or an open off-campus position | Check that the drive matches your stream and batch |
| 2. Initial screening | A recruiter contacts you through your placement officer or registered email if there's a fit | Keep your registered email active and check spam |
| 3. Assessments | Depending on the role: communication, aptitude and/or technical skills | Practise all three under time pressure |
| 4. Interviews | With the hiring team, virtually or in person, if you clear the assessments | Rehearse your project walkthrough and fundamentals |
| 5. Result | Shared with your placement officer (campus) or with you directly (off-campus) | Track status on the GenC candidate platform |

Cognizant's How we hire page for India describes a shorter sequence: find a matching role, a short intro call with a recruiter, then interviews with the hiring team. "Some roles may also require technical assessments and/or client interviews." Two practical notes from the page:
- No individual status updates. Because of high application volume in India, Cognizant says it can't share individual updates. It contacts only the candidates selected to move forward.
- Background verification. New hires go through checks on education, previous employment and references. Where the law permits, criminal history may also be reviewed, and some roles need a credit check or a pre-screening drug test.
Assessment practice
Aptitude: a worked example
Practice question: A 180-metre train runs at 72 km/h. How long does it take to pass a signal pole?
- Convert speed: 72 × 5/18 = 20 m/s (multiply km/h by 5/18 to get m/s).
- To pass a pole, the train covers its own length: 180 m.
- Time = 180 ÷ 20 = 9 seconds.
The usual trap is forgetting to convert units. Write the unit next to every number until it becomes automatic.
Communication: practise speaking and writing clearly
Cognizant says some assessments evaluate communication skills, but it doesn't publish a format. Practise in general ways:
- Read a news paragraph aloud at a steady pace, then summarise it in two sentences.
- Write a five-line email asking a manager to move a meeting, with a clear subject line.
- Record a 60-second introduction and check it for filler words.
Coding: a worked example
Practice question: Check whether an integer is a palindrome without converting it to a string.
def is_palindrome(n: int) -> bool:
if n < 0:
return False
original, reversed_num = n, 0
while n > 0:
reversed_num = reversed_num * 10 + n % 10
n //= 10
return original == reversed_num
assert is_palindrome(121) is True
assert is_palindrome(123) is False
assert is_palindrome(0) is True
assert is_palindrome(-121) is False
Explain your choice for negative numbers before you code. The minus sign means -121 does not read the same backwards, so the function returns False. Stating such decisions aloud is what interviewers mean by "thinking through edge cases."
Technical interview practice questions
| Practice question | What a complete answer covers |
|---|---|
| Pointer vs reference in C++ | A pointer can be null and reassigned; a reference must be initialised and can't be reseated |
| Explain polymorphism with an example | Compile-time (overloading) and run-time (overriding through virtual functions or method overriding) |
| SQL: count employees per department and show only departments with more than five | GROUP BY department with HAVING COUNT(*) > 5 |
| Design a simple library checkout system | Classes for Book, Member and Loan; due dates; what happens when two people request the same copy |
| Walk me through your project | Your own role, a hard bug, testing, and what you'd improve |
| For experienced roles: how would you explain a delay to a client? | Facts first, impact, recovery plan with dates, and what you've changed to prevent a repeat |
The last question matters because Cognizant says some roles include client interviews. Practise explaining your current project to someone non-technical in three minutes, without jargon.

HR round practice questions
- Tell me about yourself. (Keep it to about two minutes: studies or role, one achievement, why this job.)
- Why Cognizant, and why this role?
- Are you comfortable with the location and joining timeline? GenC onboarding happens in batches, so answer realistically.
- Describe a time you worked under pressure.
- What would you do if your DOJ were delayed? A sensible answer covers keeping in touch through official channels and continuing to build skills.
Our guide to common HR interview questions in India has answer frameworks for these.
Offer-to-joining tracker
Use this checklist after you clear the interviews. The items reflect Cognizant's published steps; the "Done" column is for you.
| Item | Why it matters | Done |
|---|---|---|
| Offer received through official Cognizant channels | Avoids fake offers | |
| Academic certificates ready to share | GenC applications ask for them, and education is verified | |
| Previous employer details and references (laterals) | Background verification checks these | |
| DOJ status checked on the candidate platform | Joining happens in batches | |
| Skills plan for the waiting period | Keeps you job-ready while you wait |
Avoid recruitment scams
Cognizant's fraud alert notice states that it "does not charge a fee at any stage of the recruitment process." It also says it has not authorised any agency to collect such fees. If anyone asks for money for training, laptops or "confirmation", stop and report it using the contact on that notice.
Key takeaways
- Freshers enter through GenC, by campus or off-campus drive. Expect role-dependent assessments (communication, aptitude, technical), then interviews.
- Experienced candidates have an intro call and hiring-team interviews, and some roles add technical assessments or client interviews.
- Joining dates come in batches, so plan for a gap after your offer.
- Cognizant never charges a recruitment fee.
