1. Start with the Banking System, Not a Glossary Dump

Banking awareness becomes manageable when every term has a home. A statute describes a legal framework; RBI guidance can explain a regulated system; NPCI material can explain a payment product; a bank's own page can state its particular offering. Do not merge them into one undated glossary.

KarmSakha preparation topics covered

  • Understand what a regulatory statute is and what it is not.
  • Distinguish statutory source, regulator guidance, payment-system guidance, and bank-specific terms.
  • Build a fact card that preserves source, locator, date, and volatility.

Know which source can support which claim

Use India Code for the text and structure of an Act. Use RBI for a regulator-issued explanation of a regulated payment system. Use NPCI for how its UPI product is described. Use your bank's official page for a product feature that can vary by bank.

This source hierarchy matters because an answer can be technically correct but still weakly sourced. For example, a generic blog may describe RTGS, but the RBI FAQ is the primary explanation for the system terms used in this workbook.

On every card, write ‘source type’ before the definition. That tiny label stops you from mistaking a bank advertisement for statutory wording or a historical FAQ for a current fee schedule.

Start every banking-awareness note by naming the kind of claim you are making. A statutory definition, a regulator's system description, a payment-system operator's role description, and a particular bank's current product condition are not interchangeable. The first three may be anchored to their respective primary sources; the fourth requires the bank's current official page and a retrieval date. This classification is an original note-making method. It stops a learner from citing a broad regulator page for a narrow bank condition, or from treating an old promotional page as proof of a general legal rule.

Build a source card with five visible fields: claim in one sentence, source owner, precise locator, retrieval date, and expiry decision. The expiry decision can be stable text, review before use, or unresolved. A system definition may be relatively stable, while a fee, limit, feature, or product condition can change and must be re-checked on the responsible institution's current page. Do not conceal an expiry decision by removing the date. A dated answer is more honest than an answer that appears timeless simply because the source line was omitted.

Read the scope of the source before extracting a fact. A legal text supports its own wording; an RBI page supports the guidance it publishes; an NPCI page supports its stated product description; a bank page supports that bank's current offering. If the page does not answer the exact question, keep the card in research rather than stretching a nearby sentence into a broader claim. This practice is particularly useful in banking awareness because similar words such as transfer, account, settlement, charge, and interest can have different meanings in different contexts.

Use a monthly evidence review rather than a mass rewrite. Randomly choose a few cards from each source class, open the cited page, and check whether the locator still supports the claim. If it has changed, archive the old card with its date, create a new current card, and remove the old one from active recall. If it has not changed, leave a short confirmation note. This original audit routine gives your revision material a change history and makes it much easier to explain why a formerly correct answer should no longer be used.

Make fact cards that can expire safely

A stable card might name an Act and its official title. A changing card might describe a service feature, a product rule, a rate, or a current circular. Mark changing cards ‘refresh required’ and record when you checked the issuing authority.

Keep the fact itself separate from your mnemonic. A mnemonic can help recall but cannot support a claim. If the fact changes, update the source-backed card first and then revise the mnemonic.

For exam preparation, do not confuse ‘frequently asked’ with ‘guaranteed to be asked’. A current notification controls an actual recruitment test; this book develops foundations only.

Solved examples

  1. Classify the fact as bank-specific and changeable.
  2. Find the concerned bank's current official schedule and the relevant regulator source if needed.
  3. Record the retrieval date; do not use an old coaching note.
  1. A statute title identifies a primary legal source.
  2. A category label may vary by publisher.
  3. Add the Act page locator for re-checking.

Practice set

Q1. Which source is primary for the official title of the Banking Regulation Act?

  • India Code
  • An undated quiz list
  • A social post
  • A coaching thumbnail

Q2. What should a volatile fact card always include?

  • Retrieval date and responsible source
  • Only a mnemonic
  • A predicted cut-off
  • A video view count

Q3. Which statement is safest for this workbook?

  • It builds foundations; the live notification controls a test
  • It fixes every bank exam pattern
  • It guarantees questions
  • It states all bank fees forever

Q4. Which pair should not be treated as the same kind of source?

  • A statute and a bank product page
  • A source and its locator
  • A card and its date
  • A question and an answer

Q5. What is the first task after finding a term in a search snippet?

  • Open the issuing source and record its locator
  • Memorise the snippet
  • Call it a PYQ
  • Remove its date

Q6. Which label belongs on an original calculation question?

  • Original derivation
  • Official bank circular
  • Memory-based paper
  • Guaranteed question

Practice answers and explanations

Q1. India Code — India Code hosts the official Act record and its title.

Q2. Retrieval date and responsible source — A changing claim needs a traceable source and a refresh point.

Q3. It builds foundations; the live notification controls a test — This book makes no future-pattern promise.

Q4. A statute and a bank product page — They can serve different purposes and have different authority for a claim.

Q5. Open the issuing source and record its locator — A searchable snippet is not a citation.

Q6. Original derivation — The calculation is authored for learning and is not represented as an official assessment item.

Revision checklist

  • I can choose a source type for a claim.
  • I mark changing facts for refresh.
  • I do not confuse a foundation book with an official notification.

2. Deposits, Lending, and Interest Language

The Banking Regulation Act is a primary legal reference for banking-law context. This chapter does not provide product recommendations or current deposit/loan rates. It uses original arithmetic to explain the vocabulary of principal, rate, time, simple interest, and compound growth.

KarmSakha preparation topics covered

  • Read banking terms as relationships among depositor, bank, borrower, principal, rate, and time.
  • Use a formula only after defining its variables.
  • Separate a general mathematical exercise from a bank's current product condition.

Translate a word problem into variables

For simple interest, write P for principal, R for annual rate percent, and T for time in years. The original formula used in this workbook is SI = P×R×T/100. It is a calculation model, not a quotation of a bank product's rate or compounding convention.

For compound growth, the important idea is that a later period uses the amount produced by earlier periods. Do not assume every financial product uses the same compounding frequency; use the conditions in the question or the bank's official terms.

Whenever a question gives a rate, circle the time unit. A monthly figure and an annual percentage cannot be mixed without a stated conversion.

Write a verbal equation before substituting symbols. Interest earned on principal for two years tells you what P, R, and T must mean; it also exposes whether the question says simple interest, compound growth, discount, or instalment. A formula applied to the wrong relationship is still a wrong answer even when the arithmetic is flawless.

Use a final boundary check for every finance-flavoured question: which values are invented practice inputs and which claims would require a current official source? This book may use a rupee amount to train a method, but it never turns that amount into a live deposit rate, loan offer, service charge, or recommendation.

Convert the language of a banking-style numerical question into a small variable list before you calculate. Write principal or starting amount as P, rate as r, time as t, total as A, and interest or change as I only when the question actually supplies those ideas. Then write the relationship you intend to use in words before symbols. This is an original derivation discipline, not a statement of any bank's rate, product, or eligibility condition. Its value is that a learner can see which number represents a base, which number represents a change, and which number is merely a distracting detail.

For a simple original example, suppose a question states a starting amount of 1,000, an annual simple rate of 8 percent, and two years. The interest expression is 1,000 multiplied by 8 divided by 100 multiplied by 2, which gives 160. If the question asks for total amount under that stated simple-interest assumption, add the starting amount to get 1,160. The values are invented teaching values. Do not transfer them to a deposit, loan, or account decision; actual financial conditions must be checked with the relevant current official source.

Make a unit and period check before accepting an answer. If a rate is annual and time is given in months, state the conversion you are using. If a problem speaks of a monthly value, do not quietly treat it as an annual value because a formula looks familiar. The main error in many word problems is not multiplication but an unexamined mismatch between the rate period and the time period. Writing the units beside each number creates a visible checkpoint and makes later correction possible.

Finish every calculation with a reasonableness check. Ask whether a positive rate should have produced a positive change under the question's assumptions, whether a part is smaller than its stated total, and whether the final unit matches what was asked. If an answer fails the check, return to the equation and inspect the base, rate conversion, and operation order. An original calculation should be reproducible line by line. This is more useful than a memorised shortcut because it lets you repair a new question even when its wording is unfamiliar.

Use relationship words precisely

A depositor places money with a bank under stated terms; a borrower receives credit under stated terms. In an exam question, first identify who pays, who receives, and what quantity is being measured before calculating.

Do not infer a real product feature from a word such as ‘savings’ or ‘term’. Actual eligibility, rates, withdrawal conditions, and charges are institution-specific and can change.

Build two columns in your notes: ‘definition or relationship’ and ‘current product condition’. The first may be a stable concept; the second must point to a current official page.

Solved examples

  1. P = 8,000, R = 5, T = 2.
  2. SI = 8,000×5×2/100.
  3. SI = ₹800.
  1. Take ₹100 as a base.
  2. After one period it is ₹110.
  3. A further 10% of ₹110 is ₹11, so total is ₹121, a 21% increase.

Practice set

Q1. What is the simple interest on ₹5,000 at 4% per year for 3 years?

  • ₹600
  • ₹200
  • ₹1,200
  • ₹5,600

Q2. In SI = PRT/100, what does T represent when the rate is annual?
