1. Read the Railway Notice Before You Schedule the Work
The cited CEN 05/2024 lists Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and school-level General/Life Science among its stated topics. It also says its section-wise distribution is indicative and that the actual paper may vary. That language is a useful lesson: an official notice is specific to its own cycle.
KarmSakha preparation topics covered
Locate the live CEN, corrigenda, and city/intimation instructions.
Translate official subject headings into a weekly plan.
Use any historical notice only as a labelled example, never as a forecast.
Turn notice headings into a coverage board
Write the live notice's exact headings across the top of a page. Under each heading, add subtopics only when they appear in the notice, syllabus, or a clearly marked foundational source. This keeps a small topic like data sufficiency from disappearing beneath a large collection of random PDFs.
Use a three-status system: not started, active, and recall-ready. A topic is recall-ready only when you can solve a fresh original question and explain the rule without looking at the answer.
When a new corrigendum changes the instructions, update the coverage board and the test routine. Do not silently continue using a previous cycle's assumption.
Give every topic an evidence tag beside its study status. A tag can say official notice scope, official textbook foundation, source-mapped current fact, or original derivation. The tag prevents a learner from assuming that a formula, a science definition, and a future exam instruction have the same source status.
At the end of each week, compare the board with the actual notice headings rather than with the number of pages completed. If a heading has many notes but no fresh retrieval practice, schedule one short original set. If a heading has practice but no source or concept note, return to the authoritative source before adding more questions.
Create a version ledger before you turn headings into a timetable. Give the ledger four fields: document name, publication or correction date, official location, and the decision it changes. A historical notice belongs in the ledger as context, while the live notice belongs there as the authority for the present cycle. This is an original control method, not an instruction issued by the RRB. Its purpose is to prevent a familiar failure: a learner uses a precise sentence from an old document but forgets that the sentence answered an old cycle's question. A ledger lets you retain the useful study context without borrowing a future rule.
Break each official heading into three study objects. The first is a source note that says where the heading came from. The second is a concept note that explains the core method or textbook idea in your own words. The third is an original retrieval task that makes you use the concept without looking. For Mathematics, that might mean a stated derivation; for General Science, a diagram and causal explanation; for General Awareness, a factual card with a responsible source. These objects have different evidence standards. Keeping them separate makes it harder to mistake a helpful exercise for an official question.
Make the board visible enough to reveal imbalance. A learner may have many percentage questions but no source note for General Awareness, or several science labels but no explanation of a process. Use a small marker for source read, concept explained, original practice attempted, and error repaired. A column with only one marker is not finished merely because it looks busy. This original audit approach shifts the question from how much material has been collected to whether each topic can be supported, understood, and retrieved under ordinary time pressure.
When a live instruction changes, update only the affected board entries. If an authority changes an application action, a stage description, or an exam instruction, record the newer locator and the precise planning consequence. Do not rewrite unrelated foundation chapters to make the notebook look current. The difference between an administrative update and a concept revision matters: the first changes what you do for the cycle, while the second changes what you understand. A clean change note tells you which is which and avoids treating all updates as a reason to abandon a stable study routine.
Finish each weekly review by choosing one small repair from every major source type. Re-open one official instruction, re-explain one textbook concept, recompute one original derivation, and re-check one time-sensitive fact against its responsible source. This is not a forecast of subject weight or a prescribed daily schedule. It is an original evidence-first review loop. Its value is practical: when a mock result is disappointing, you can identify whether the next repair is a source issue, a concept issue, a method issue, or a reading issue instead of collecting another generic timetable.
Use historical pattern data honestly
A historic notice can teach you how to read a recruitment document: identify the examination stage, question type, duration language, marking language, and source date. It cannot establish the same values for a later CEN.
Keep a small label on every mock: ‘original practice; pattern must be checked against current notice’. That protects learners from confusing a method workbook with an official sample paper.
If the current notice is unavailable, build fundamentals but leave timed simulation settings blank. Fill them only after the authority publishes the applicable instructions.
Solved examples
Label it as historical context.
Use it to organise broad foundations only.
Replace any timings or counts when the live CEN is published.
List the official subject heading.
Add a current source for the topic scope.
Leave unsupported timing assumptions blank.

Ignore the official notice
Copy a coaching timetable exactly
Q2. Which source should set the timing for your actual railway exam attempt?
The current official notice
A past CEN alone
An undated mock description
A social post
Q3. What is an honest label for a question created for this workbook?
Original practice
Official PYQ
Memory-based paper
Guaranteed question
Q4. Which broad subject family is named in the cited NTPC CEN?
General Intelligence and Reasoning

Practice answers and explanations
Q1. Use it as context, not a guarantee — The cited CEN itself says the actual question paper may vary.
Q2. The current official notice — A timing rule belongs to the applicable authority-issued instructions.
Q3. Original practice — Origin claims need a published official-paper link; this workbook's questions are authored exercises.
Q4. General Intelligence and Reasoning — The cited topic list includes General Intelligence and Reasoning.
Revision checklist
I can find the live CEN for my cycle.
I label historic notices as historic.
My mock settings are not presented as authority-issued unless sourced.
2. Mathematics: Convert Language into Operations
The cited CEN lists number system, decimals, fractions, LCM/HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, time and work, time and distance, interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. The examples below are original derivations built from those scope labels.
KarmSakha preparation topics covered
Practise percentage, ratio, averages, work, and number relations named in the official topic list.
Write an equation before applying a shortcut.
Check units and direction of change before selecting an option.
A percentage is a fraction with denominator 100
Translate percentage language before calculating. ‘15% of 240’ is 15/100 × 240, so cancellation gives 36. A decrease of 20% and an increase of 20% do not cancel because the second percentage is applied to a different base.
For a ratio question, first ask what the total represents. If a ratio is 3:5, there are eight equal parts; a total of 64 means one part is 8, so the values are 24 and 40.
Write the base beside every percentage. This one habit catches most errors in discount, profit, population, and comparison questions.
Begin every percentage question by naming the whole that the percentage is taken from. The word of usually identifies that whole, but a comparison question may use an earlier value, a total, a marked price, or a selected group as the base. Write the base in words before writing any numbers. This simple step makes the equation inspectable: percentage change equals change divided by the stated base, multiplied by one hundred. The arithmetic is an original derivation; the historical CEN source establishes topic scope, not the values or the method wording in this workbook.
Use a two-pass check for increase and decrease. In the first pass, calculate the absolute change. In the second, divide by the correct original base. For an original example, a value moving from 80 to 100 changes by 20, so the increase is 20 divided by 80, or 25 percent. Reversing the direction changes the base: a fall from 100 to 80 is 20 divided by 100, or 20 percent. Writing both directions beside each other is a useful safeguard against the mistaken belief that equal numerical movements must produce equal percentage changes.
Treat successive changes as operations on a changing base. If an original price rises by 10 percent and then falls by 10 percent, the second operation applies to the raised amount, not to the starting amount. You can demonstrate this with a neutral starting value of 100: after a 10 percent rise it becomes 110; a 10 percent fall on 110 is 11, leaving 99. The example is not a commercial claim or a real fare calculation. It is a transparent way to see why verbal symmetry does not guarantee numerical cancellation.
Connect ratios, fractions, and percentages instead of memorising unrelated tricks. A ratio of 3 to 5 describes three equal parts compared with five equal parts; a share out of the combined total is 3 out of 8, which can be written as 3 divided by 8 and then converted to a percentage if the question asks for it. Always say which comparison you are making. A ratio can describe a relationship, while a percentage can describe a share of a named whole or a change from a named base. The symbols are easy; the chosen denominator carries the meaning.
Build an error log that records the missing decision rather than only the wrong answer. Useful labels include wrong base, change direction reversed, ratio total misread, units omitted, and calculation not checked. For each label, write one short repair rule and one fresh original example. If the error was wrong base, the repair might be to underline from what value before calculating. This makes a percentage chapter reusable: you are not merely repeating a familiar formula, but practising how to identify the structure of a new question before the timer begins.
Work questions: conserve worker-days
When workers are equally efficient and the task is unchanged, workers × days is constant. Five workers taking 12 days represent 60 worker-days; ten workers would take 6 days under the stated equal-efficiency condition.
State assumptions before using this relation. If efficiency differs, if work is added, or if workers join halfway through, build a rate table instead of using an inverse shortcut blindly.
Timed accuracy improves when you write the unit ‘worker-days’ rather than merely cross-multiplying numbers.
Build a rate table whenever the language is richer than the simple equal-efficiency case. Give each worker or group a one-day rate, multiply by the number of days actually worked, and add the completed parts. If a worker joins late, that row simply has fewer days; there is no need to force a shortcut built for a different situation.
Use a reverse check after solving. Multiply the final days by the total daily rate and see whether the original work total returns. A reverse check is especially valuable when a question contains fractions, partial work, or a change in workforce, because it tests the equation rather than your confidence in the answer.
Solved examples
Write 15% as 15/100.
Compute 15/100 × 240.
Cancel 240/100 = 2.4, then 15 × 2.4 = 36.
