UGC NET certifies eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities/colleges, conducted twice a year by NTA. CSIR NET is the parallel science-stream version for select subjects.

Selection process

Paper 1 (General/Teaching aptitude, common for all subjects) and Paper 2 (subject-specific), both objective, same day.
Result declared as qualifying for Assistant Professor, JRF, or both, based on your score and category.

Paper 1: 50 questions, 100 marks
Paper 2: 100 questions, 200 marks

UGC NET covers humanities, social sciences, commerce and most subjects; CSIR NET covers a specific set of science subjects (Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Earth Sciences) — NTA conducts both.

Does UGC NET guarantee a teaching job?

No — it certifies eligibility for Assistant Professor recruitment and/or JRF; you still need to apply separately to specific university/college recruitment or PhD programs.
