Exam Pattern, Eligibility and Selection Strategy

This chapter sets out the frame of the recruitment this book prepares you for: the written test pattern, eligibility, the selection stages and how the final merit list is built. The Uttar Pradesh Home Guards Enrolment-2025 drive reached its final selection result on 3 October 2026, so the chapter is a reference for the next recruitment cycle, not an application guide. Facts taken from the board's own notices are stated as such; facts that only news reports carry are marked as reported, and the next notice governs wherever it differs.

KarmSakha preparation topics covered

  • Enrolment-2025 at a glance: notice, posts, applications, test dates and cycle status
  • The written test pattern: 100 questions, 100 marks, 120 minutes, six shifts
  • The 25 per cent qualifying mark and how it differs from merit ranking
  • Eligibility as reported: Class 10 pass, age 18 to 30 and district residence (confirm in the notice)
  • The official stage order and how the final merit list is built
  • Normalisation, preferential marks and the tie-break rule
  • What remains unconfirmed: negative marking and the subject list
  • Pacing at 72 seconds per question, a two-pass method and an error log

Enrolment-2025 at a glance and the cycle status

The Uttar Pradesh Home Guards Enrolment-2025 recruitment was run by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) under Notice No. PRPB-B (Home Guard Cadre)-02/2025, dated 18 November 2025. According to the board's final-result notice, it invited online applications district-wise for 41,424 vacant Home Guard posts across all districts of the state, and 25,32,196 applications were received. Careers360 reports that applications closed on 17 December 2025 and that a correction window ran from 18 to 21 December 2025. The written test was held on 25, 26 and 27 April 2026 in six shifts, at centres in 74 districts.

A vacancy total from a news report deserves a sum check. The Careers360 report gives the category-wise figures as General 16,650, EWS 4,331, OBC 11,090, SC 8,645 and ST 808. Adding them gives 41,524, while the board's notice states 41,424, so the report's split is wrong by 100 somewhere. The practical lesson is to use a news report to find the notice, and to take every vacancy number, category split and cut-off from the board's own documents. A total that fails a sum check is a reason to go to the source, not a reason to pick the more convenient figure.

The cycle has closed. The board's notice of 3 October 2026 published the final selection result: 41,424 candidates were selected against the 41,424 posts in the 75 districts, 8,290 of them women, and the district-wise lists carry the cut-off marks of the last selected candidate in each district. The notice also said that each candidate's normalised score plus preferential marks would be made available on the board's website in the last week of October 2026. Nothing in this chapter describes an open application window. Prepare for the next enrolment, and read its notice as soon as it is published.

The written test: pattern, qualifying mark and dates

The written test has 100 objective questions of 1 mark each, a total of 100 marks, and a duration of 120 minutes, answered offline on an OMR sheet. Careers360's report of the enrolment guidelines (4 November 2025) describes a 100-mark, two-hour objective paper in general knowledge, and Careers360's news report and the PhysicsWallah page give the same counts; the PhysicsWallah page quotes the marking rule, "Each correct answer will be awarded 1 Mark." Because the test ran in six shifts, the board normalised the marks across shifts before preparing the merit list. The subject and negative-marking rows of the table are the two that the board's published notices do not settle, and section 5 explains them.

Qualifying works as a floor. The PhysicsWallah page states that candidates securing less than 25 per cent in the written examination will not be eligible for enrolment, and Patrika's report of 23 December 2025 says the same. On a 100-mark paper the floor is therefore 25 marks, and a score of 24 falls below it. Careers360 gives the same 25 per cent figure. Several independent reports agreeing on one number is a reasonable basis for using it, although the next notice must still confirm it before any decision is taken.

Qualifying does not rank candidates. In the 2025 drive the board ranked candidates on normalised written marks plus preferential marks and called about 2.6 times the vacancies for the next stage, district-wise and category-wise. A candidate with 25 marks is eligible to be ranked, but whether that rank is high enough depends on the scores of other candidates in the same district and category, which is why the final list carries a separate cut-off for each district. Keep the two ideas apart when you set a target: 25 is the line you must clear, and the district cut-off is where you need to finish.

Eligibility and reading the notice first

The eligibility reported for the 2025 cycle has three parts. Careers360's report of the enrolment guidelines gives the education requirement as Class 10 pass or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Uttar Pradesh government, and says that candidates who have only appeared, or are yet to appear, for Class 10 are not eligible. The age limit is 18 to 30 years. Careers360's recruitment guide adds that candidates must belong to the district for which they apply, which follows from the district-wise vacancies. The reference date for age is not given in these reports; some summaries give 1 July 2025, but that date is not confirmed here, so read the age clause and its relaxations in the next notice before relying on any figure.

A reference date changes the answer, because age limits are measured on a fixed day and not on the day you apply. Take a candidate born on 15 March 1996 and the reported date of 1 July 2025. On that date the candidate has completed 29 years: the 2025 birthday fell on 15 March, before the reference date, and the next one falls in 2026. The solved examples work through this method. The same check applies to every other date-linked rule in a notice, such as a qualification cut-off date or a relaxation for a reserved category.

The habit to build is to read three clauses before any preparation starts: the eligibility clause with its relaxations, the examination clause with the pattern, language and marking rule, and the selection clause with the stage order, preferential qualifications and document list. A news report points to these clauses but cannot replace them. The 2025 reports show why: they agree on 100 marks and two hours, yet differ on the subject list and say nothing reliable about negative marking, so one page can be precise on one rule and silent or wrong on another.

The official stage order and how the final merit list is built

The board's final-result notice of 3 October 2026 records the stages in the order they ran. The written test came first, and its marks were normalised across the six shifts. A merit list was then prepared from the normalised written marks plus the marks for preferential qualifications attached to the application, following the state's reservation rules, and about 2.6 times the vacancies, 1,07,221 candidates, were called for document scrutiny and the Physical Standard Test (DV/PST) from 13 July to 7 August 2026. Those who passed took the qualifying Physical Efficiency Test in September 2026. Chapter 10 covers those physical and document stages in detail.

The final list was drawn district by district. Candidates who cleared the written test, DV/PST and PET were ranked on their normalised written score plus preferential marks, and selected against each district's vacancies under the reservation policy. The physical tests carry no marks, so they decide only who stays in the race; the written paper decides the rank. When two or more candidates had equal marks, the state's Home Guards Enrolment Guidelines (government order of 3 November 2025) placed the older candidate first, and if still tied, ordered them by the first letter of the name in the High School certificate, in English alphabetical order.

Selection is not the last check. The notice makes the result subject to a health examination by the appointing authority and to verification of educational qualification, preferential-qualification certificates, reservation certificates and character. The 2025 result also shows the reservation rules at work: under section 2(3) of the Uttar Pradesh Public Services (Reservation for SC, ST and OBC) (Amendment) Act, 2007, 439 Scheduled Tribe vacancies in 50 districts, for which no ST candidate was available, were filled from the Scheduled Caste category. For planning, the order means the written score must be strong enough to reach the shortlist, after which every physical and document stage is a pass-or-fail gate.
