Targeted measures vital to reverse prolonged decline in rice production in Kerala, says Performance Budget on Agriculture department

The Performance Budget on the Agriculture department in Kerala has highlighted the need for targeted measures to reverse the prolonged decline in rice production in the state. The document recommends tax concessions or cultivation-linked subsidies to encourage the retention of paddy lands, as the area under paddy and production has plummeted from 3.47 lakh hectares and 7.51 lakh tonnes respectively in 2000-01 to 1.76 lakh hectares and 5.30 lakh tonnes in 2024-25.
